To begin your journey to simple septic tank systems

Spotting an issue with your Septic Tank, Soakaway or Sewage Treatment Plant

Issues with septic tanks, sewage treatment systems and soakaways can be caused by a number of different issues – from a simple blockage causing effluent to divert or flow back into the property, to more major concerns such as damage to the system from tree roots or cracked pipework. The good news is that Proseptic’s experienced and prepared team are on hand to diagnose any issue and offer straight-forward, understandable solutions to prevent further damage occurring.

Signs of Septic Tank issues

Being out of the way and underground can mean that septic tanks are often forgotten about until it is time for a septic tank inspection or when an issue arises. It is important to book a septic tank inspection as soon as any signs of damage, leakage or blockage becomes apparent. Common signs of an issue include;

  • Unusual odours inside the property.
  • Unusual sounds – such as gurgling or spluttering when using the drains or flushing the toilet.
  • Slow draining of water from sinks or toilets.
  • Reintroduction of waste into the drains or overflowing into the property.
  • Unusual odours around the septic tank site.
  • Unusually wet or squishy ground around the septic tank site.

Many of these signs signal that something is drastically wrong with the septic tank and will need urgent attention. However, many of these symptoms can be early signs, allowing our skilled engineers to act quickly and prevent further, costlier damage once a septic tank survey has been carried out.

Sewage Treatment Plant Issues

Sewage treatment plants are easily put to the back of the mind and only become the focus for many homeowners when it is time for an inspection or when signs of an issue become apparent. Symptoms of a damaged sewage treatment plant include;

  • Slow or blocked drainage.
  • Leakage within the property or in exposed pipework.
  • Wet or squishy ground surrounding the sewage treatment plant site.
  • Wet spots above underground pipework.
  • Unusual odours in and around the property.
  • Unusual odours coming from the sewage treatment plant site.

Soakaway Issues

Soakaways are systems to remove cleansed effluent from sewage treatment plants and septic tanks. As the final step in sewage treatment, soakaways can be taken for granted and are easy to forget about most of the time. However, it is possible for soakaways to become damaged over time. It is important to have any signs of damage or disrepair diagnosed as soon as possible, to avoid further damages, health concerns property damage and problems with neighbouring properties.

Common signs of problems with soakaways are;

  • Excessively damp, wet or squishy ground around the soakaway site.
  • Unpleasant odours arising from the site of the soakaway.
  • Concerns from neighbours.
  • Leakage from another part of the system, or into the property itself – may be caused by a blockage.

Damaged septic tanks, soakaways and sewage treatment plants are often easy to repair and replace once professionals are involved. However, leaving a damaged sewage treatment system or ignoring signs of damage can hold very dangerous risks for your property and family, including;

  • Structural issues; including damp, rot, and irreparable damage to the property.
  • Strong odours, which may cause problems with neighbouring properties and will decrease the quality of life of everyone around.
  • Unhygienic conditions – leading top health concerns for younger children and elderly residents. Whilst sewage treatment systems are usually hygienic and an efficient way to remove effluent, broken systems can be unpredictable.
  • Further damage to the sewage treatment systems and its parts. The above issues may be signs of minor damages, with simple, quick, low-cost solutions. However, leaving the issue to ‘resolve itself’ may lead to more costly repairs or irreparable damages leading to an entirely new sewage treatment plant installation.
