Historically, properties which are not connected to main sewerage lines have been serviced by cesspits and septic tanks. These are storage facilities which work to digest waste and release a less-toxic effluent into soakaways and local waterways. However, new legislation is likely to render septic tanks discharging into ditches and streams obsolete and unfit over the next few years, therefore it is wise to upgrade your sewage treatment system ahead of time, to ensure that your property adheres to regulations, is legal and does not fall victim to any penalties or fines as a result of the new rules.
Cesspits are eco-friendly, but do require regular emptying, which can prove to be costly and will spread bad odours on emptying day. Until now, septic tanks have proven popular, but with new legislation being introduced within the next year which will set out standards for effluent disposal which septic tanks will not meet, they will soon need replacing.
Replacements will likely take the form of either retrofitted systems or the septic tank will be replaced entirely with a small treatment plant – the treatment plant is proven to cleanse effluent to almost drinking water standard (but please don’t drink it!) which means that the discharge can empty into running ditches, streams, rivers and brooks, reducing the need for costly, and smelly, emptying cycles.
