Septic Tank Installations: FAQs

How do septic tanks work?

Usually consisting of concrete or plastic chambers, a septic tank is designed to treat household waste.

By separating liquids and solids, septic tanks allow solids to be broken down by bacteria while allowing liquids to be safely discharged into a soakaway.

Septic tanks need maintaining and emptying on a regular basis. They also must comply to new septic tank regulations which came into force in January 2020.

What type of septic tank do I need?

The type and size of septic tank you need depends on a number of factors, including: the size of your property, number of inhabitants, domestic or commercial site, your budget and the availability of a dispersal medium.

At Proseptic, we have years of experience installing septic tanks across the South of England. Therefore, our engineers can advise our customers the most appropriate, compliant and legal system for their property, taking into account all the above factors.

We supply and install a wide range of industry leading septic tanks and systems, each with their own benefits. Our team are happy to discuss all options with you and answer any queries.

Through our expert service we can make your septic tank installation as simple as possible.

What do I need to know about the upcoming septic tank regulations?

In January 2020 new septic tank regulations came into place. Essentially, these state that septic tanks can no longer discharge effluent directly into streams or waterways. This is due to concerns for the environment.

All septic tanks installed after 2015 had to comply with these regulations. Therefore, newer septic tanks should be compliant with this new legislation. However, older septic tanks installed prior to this may not be compliant. They may need replacing with a sewage treatment plant or may need a soakaway installing to help discharge wastewater safely.

If you are concerned your septic tank is not compliant, our team will be more than happy to conduct a site visit and help you with your options.
